Bent Calomel Reference Electrode, Neutral | FrankLab

A Neutral-PH, Bent-Design Calomel Electrode for Specialized Electrochemical Configurations
The FrankLab Bent Calomel Reference Electrode (Neutral) is engineered for electrochemical setups where a straight-body reference electrode cannot be positioned correctly, especially in small-volume cells, H-type cells, thin-layer reactors, or geometries requiring horizontal or angled insertion.
Using the classic Hg/Hg₂Cl₂ calomel system with a neutral KCl electrolyte, this electrode offers a stable reference potential, low drift, and excellent compatibility with a wide range of aqueous systems—without the chloride saturation level of a traditional SCE.

Key Features

• Neutral Electrolyte for Broad Compatibility

Unlike saturated SCE systems, the neutral calomel electrode uses neutral KCl to:
•Reduce chloride activity for sensitive reactions
•Minimize contamination or chloride interference
•Provide a smoother baseline for kinetic and mechanistic studies
Reference potential (approx.): +0.250 V vs. NHE at 25°C (may vary slightly with ionic strength)

• Bent Electrode Geometry (Ergonomic & Space-Efficient)

Custom 90° or angled design enables:
•Easy placement in narrow neck flasks, small electrochemical cells, or two-chamber systems
•Precise junction positioning close to the working electrode
•Avoiding physical interference with working/counter electrodes
•Optimal IR-drop minimization in confined geometries
Ideal for:
•H-type CO₂RR setups
•Thin-layer cells
•PEC reactors
•Compact three-electrode vessels

• Low Drift & High Potential Stability

The calomel redox couple ensures:
•Very stable long-term potential
•Low noise during LSV, CV, and EIS
•Consistent performance for corrosion and dissolution studies

• Chemically Durable Construction

•Glass body for strong chemical resistance
•PTFE cap for long service life
•Porous ceramic/PTFE junction offering stable ionic conduction with minimal leakage

Advantages of Neutral Bent Calomel Design

• Lower chloride activity → Less risk of interfering with metal redox chemistry

Especially useful for:
•Transition metal complexes
•Corrosion/passivation studies
•Metal dissolution kinetic research

• Bent structure improves junction placement

Ensures:
•Accurate potential referencing
•Reduced ohmic drop
•Reduced cross-interference with electrodes

• Mercury-based system → superior long-term stability

Compared with Ag/AgCl, calomel maintains potential more consistently under varying chloride concentrations.

Recommended Applications

•Corrosion/polarization curve studies
•Aqueous electrocatalysis (HER/OER/ORR under neutral or mild conditions)
•CO₂RR H-type cells requiring angled referencing
•Photoelectrochemical cells with limited vertical clearance
•Thin-layer or narrow-chamber electrochemical devices
•Battery electrolyte testing (neutral media)

Usage & Safety Notes

•Temperature ≤ 50°C

Calomel electrodes contain mercury; high temperature reduces stability.

• Not for non-aqueous systems

Use via salt bridge if necessary.

• Keep junction submerged during storage

Prevents junction drying, drift, and slow response.

• Follow laboratory mercury-handling guidelines

Complies with standard research safety requirements.
Custom bend angle, junction type, body length, and connector compatibility available on request. FrankLab supports full customization for advanced R&D environments.
